Liam Gallagher, 38 anni, sarà a Milano il prossimo 16 marzo con la sua nuova band, i Beady Eye, per presentare il disco “Diferrent Gear, Still Speeding”. A Vanity Fair che gli dedica la copertina - in edicola dal 9 marzo - Liam rivela perchè ha tagliato i ponti con suo fratello Noel e perchè ha seppellito gli Oasis, una storia cominciata molti anni fa, quando i due fratelli erano piccoli e a separarli non era solo la musica.
Da quanto non vede suo fratello Noel?
«Dalla sera della lite, a Parigi. Ma non mi manca: so che è sempre lo stesso, sempre bruttissimo. Credo che nemmeno lui voglia vedere me: siamo stufi l’uno della faccia dell’altro».
Si dice che magari tra un anno, potreste tornare a lavorare insieme. Che, come vi siete separati, vi riprenderete. È possibile?
«No: gli Oasis sono finiti, non torneranno mai più insieme. Questa volta abbiamo litigato per motivi familiari nostri, precedenti a tutto, anche alla band. La tensione era arrivata alle

stelle».
Come se lo spiega questo rapporto burrascoso con suo fratello?
«Non me lo spiego. Semplicemente, Noel è una persona del tutto diversa da me. Noel si sente sempre il più grande e quindi crede che tutti gli debbano stare dietro. Ha sempre criticato tutto e tutti, io – che pure faccio musica da prima di lui – non mi permetto: non sono perfetto, e non lo è nemmeno lui».
Non ha davvero nessun ricordo positivo legato a lui?

«No. Non abbiamo mai fatto lunghe passeggiate insieme, non ci siamo mai abbracciati, non ci sono mai stati quei momenti tra fratelli, felici nei prati a sfogliare margherite, come in un film».
Ho letto che i suoi fratelli, quando eravate piccoli, la prendevano in giro, le davano del «mammone» perché stava sempre dietro a vostra madre Peggy.
«Vuole sapere la verità? Mio padre picchiava mia madre, e la sola persona che si metteva in mezzo, per proteggerla, ero io. Anche se ero il più piccolo dei fratelli (Paul è nato nel 1966, Noel nel 1967, Liam nel 1972, ndr). Gli altri due si nascondevano impauriti. È quello il motivo per cui stavo sempre con mia madre. Adoro mia madre, è la più bella cosa del mondo».
Oggi l’aiuta con i suoi figli?
«Fa la nonna: ogni tanto viene da Manchester a trovarli, come va a trovare quelli di Noel. Ma ai figli pensiamo io e Nicole (sua moglie Nicole Appleton, cantante delle All Saints, madre di

da una breve relazione con Lisa Moorish, ndr)».
Nicole e Sara, tra cognate, si parlano?
«Certo. Non solo si parlano: sono amiche. Vanno insieme in palestra e dal parrucchiere una volta alla settimana».
Bizzarro, no?
«Non è bizzarro: loro si piacciono, continuano a fare il fottuto shopping insieme».

Ma non le sembra strano che tutti quelli intorno a voi siano amici, tranne voi due?
«In effetti suona un po’ come il fottuto Sex And the City. Tutti lì a fare shopping, party, cene, tranne i due fratelli pazzi».
Liquida così la faccenda?
«Sì, perché non c’è altro da dire: siamo stupidi, infantili, ci punzecchiamo come due bambini, è sempre stato così e così sempre sarà. Non so perché».
A proposito di bambini: ha detto che i suoi figli le hanno cambiato la vita. Come? «Non sono diventato più serio, come hanno scritto, solo un po’ più saggio. Certo, il fatto di essere in una rock’n’roll band mi gasa sempre molto, ho voglia di divertirmi, mi piacciono i miei Beady fottutissimi Eye. Ma basta sballi: le droghe erano qualcosa che girava quando ero giovane, poi è finita. Sto invecchiando anche io, e ubriacarmi tutte le sere non è più così interessante. E poi, sa una cosa? Ogni giorno va meglio: sono sempre più innamorato di mia moglie e dei miei figli».

British songwriter, singer, producer, DJ and former member of the early 1990s shoegazing band, Ride, and now, Oasis speaks to Glasswerk about his recent gigs in Korea, the backlash of the Slane gig in Ireland and what the future holds for Oasis. Just don’t mention Liam or Noel.

Hello Andy. How are you doing?

I’m just gonna move over here - I can hear your voice louder in the room rather than on the phone… give me a minute, ok it’s fine now - I’m doing good thanks Kenny. (Andy moves about 10 feet away from me).

So where you at right now? You just finished a number of gigs in South Korea, Liam seemed they went well according to his Twitter updates.

Yeah they went really well actually (nothing elaborated on Liam’s Tweet, and I further sense he would rather me not mention the ‘brothers’ at all. The infamous Q interview with Noel, Liam recently stating he does not know what the future holds etc, it’s obvious there’s something up in the Oasis camp, but let’s forget about that for now).

So what’s next and how is your career standing?

(Andy chuckles) Yeah we finished our tour in Korea which went really well, we’ve got 6 more gigs on this tour, 3 of them in the UK, 2 festivals in Europe then we’re done!

My career is doing fine by the way…

How did you feel about the media backlash of the Slane show?

Tell me about it Kenny - I haven’t actually heard about it. Slane was a great gig, a brilliant night for all of us.

Absolutely, I was in the pit with Paul (oldest Gallagher) & we had a blast. But for ticket buyers - MCD were blamed for bad organisation, including 3 hour queues for apparently 2 or 3 pints per person. There was trouble going on at various points, fights, reports of people being robbed, (one girl was subject to a guy both groping her as she queued for a drink, while his chum decided to use her leg as a portaloo). And it was apparently a total nightmare getting out of Slane back home. MCD were blamed in the media for overselling the gig.

Who are MCD?

They are the chief promoters who brought the band over. (If Andy doesn’t know who MCD are, there’s no point in bringing up the Joe Duffy show).

Ah yeah right, I haven’t heard of this backlash but I understand the difficulty getting out of Slane - it took us 3 hours to get out ourselves.

It’s a problem with Slane Castle - but I actually enjoyed it, I got out of the car at least 3 times and the streets were just full of Oasis fans, they were going wild, and I really enjoyed that whole thing. You know what, I wish there wasn’t an aftermath but there’s only 1 or 2 ways out of Slane I think… that’s probably why.

So touring the world, you must be used to it by now - do you think it suits you?

I think I’m suited to it Kenny, I’ve been in the same position for nearly 8 years but I am comfortable - like me and Gem (Archer) both kinda do the same thing. But the band is strong and the band is good but knowing Noel & Liam…

Speaking of which, do Noel & Liam still slag you off for not being a ‘northerner’?

Yeah that’s all settled down now man. We’re all really nice about that actually - scousers, mancs, oxfordians, geordies - we’ve always given each other stick for it but that’s why we all love each other.

Yeah, I spent some of my time down the pit with Paul Gallagher and I got to say, he’s a manc but a true gent. I was gutted when he contracted Swine Flu as he was due to DJ in Belgium with 3 of my mates. It was gonna be an Irish invasion of Belgium but he had to cancel obviously.

Yeah Paul’s a wicked fella - shit hot DJ too. It’s a shame what happened, I think he’s on the mend thankfully.

Glasswerk would like to bring him over for a DJ set sometime, he recently sold out Eamon Dorans in a flash.

He’s got an amazing record collection - he’d rock it anywhere I’m sure. Plus, he’s really proud of his Irish roots - big into GAA and that kinda thing. He loves Ireland.

One more thing, is it true that Noel referred to you as like something from the Michael Jacksons Memorial, because of you being the only band member wearing shades?

Yeah Noel says a lot of shit but normally I can’t answer for him but yeah, he did say that.

You know from watching from the Pit - I still believe the band has got the spark.

I’m glad to hear it Kenny as I get the spark everytime.

Andy Bell, it’s been a pleasure speaking to you. I know you’re a busy man, so thank you for your time.

I really wanted to ask about Liam’s love for Noel and vice versa, but my gut was saying no - plus this was a man who formed Ride and helped bands like The Verve back in the early nineties, so to me his legacy speaks for itself and it didn’t feel like I was speaking to the bass player in Oasis - I was in fact speaking to a singer, seminal songwriter, and currently a shades wearing bass guitarist with (still) one of the biggest bands in the world. But before Oasis Creation Records signed Ride, and before Britpop there was Andy Bell. That’s good enough for us.

Tutto sembra, fuorché un rocker. Ha il magnetismo di un venditore di fish and chips. È la prima volta che lo incontro, parto prendendola larga. «Avete pubblicato il primo disco l’anno in cui è morto Cobain, e i Guns N’Roses collassarono. I Take That erano al top, i Soundgarden cantavano Black Hole Sun. 15 anni fa. Che cos’hai imparato?» Noel Gallagher tace a lungo. «Non saprei davvero. Forse niente. Non sono arrivato alla verità».

Perché siete arrivati così in alto, e ci siete rimasti?
«Oh, i nostri fan si somigliano molto, penso siano soprattutto della working class e che vogliano stare tra loro, come tifosi di una squadra. I dischi sono una buona cosa, ma credo che sia più esaltante ascoltare gli Oasis con altri 50mila fan degli Oasis».

Potrebbe esserci una forte identificazione perché non siete mai stati cool, ma siete sempre stati diretti, onesti.
«Di certo non abbiamo un Bono o un Chris Martin che predica, e non invitiamo la gente a cantare in coro. Noi saliamo e suoniamo queste fottute canzoni e poi finiamo sbronzi. Sono stato a tanti concerti, e parlano tutti di politica fino allo sfinimento. E suonate ’sta cazzo di musica, la gente è lì per quello! Quando vedi U2 o Coldplay, sai che prima o poi ti arriva un sermone sui poveri o su un fottuto popolo che muore di fame. Sì, lo so che sono cose vere, ma non possiamo solo avere una bella serata invece che sentirci in colpa?».

C’è stato un periodo in cui i politici portavano all’occhiello voi e altri musicisti.
«I media avevano coniato questa cosa della cool Britannia, che era anche un modo per disprezzarci. La stampa inglese è middle class, e non ama noi proletari. Preferiscono Radiohead e Coldplay. Comunque, non mi interessa la politica, non mi ispira. Sono cresciuto con i laburisti all’opposizione, combattevano per i disoccupati. Sentivi i loro discorsi su salari minimi, scuola, sanità e gli davi ragione. Li ho votati per anni. Poi quando sono andati al governo li ho conosciuti e ho scoperto che sono come tutti gli altri. È come scoprire che non esiste Babbo Natale. Non erano il cambiamento. E io non voterò più».

State sul palco come quando suonavate nei pub.
«Sì, lo spirito è quello, solo che non possiamo più esibirci in un club perché rimarrebbero fuori in troppi. Ma siamo una stadium pub band. Odio i set acustici, odio le scenografie pretenziose, non siamo come gli U2 che usano marchingegni alla James Bond. Ancora mi imbarazza ricordare quando mettemmo la cabina telefonica e la Rolls Royce sul palco, ma ero pieno di cocaina e mi sembrava figo».

Senti, ma perché la droga?
«Perché è una figata».

A me rock, donne, successo e soldi basterebbero e avanzerebbero per andare fuori di testa.
«Io invece non capisco chi non si droga! Chris Martin dice di non averlo mai fatto in vita sua: che fottuto idiota, che gusto c’è a essere in una rockband se non vai in orbita? Non prendo droga dal 1998, ma ne ho presa tanta. Ci avrò speso almeno un milione di sterline e sono stati i soldi meglio spesi. Mentre ero fatto, ho avuto le conversazioni più brillanti e le idee migliori della mia vita!».

Allora perché hai smesso?
«Perché fa male alla salute, al cervello, alla vita, a chi ti sta attorno».

È stata dura, smettere?
«La cosa più dura è stata mollare quelli che si facevano con me. Non conoscevo nessun altro a Londra, e con loro attorno avrei ricominciato. Ma non rimpiango nulla. Ai ragazzi direi: prendete tutto, ma solo per provare. Le droghe sono un’invenzione favolosa, è la dipendenza che ti crea casini pazzeschi. D’altronde da quasi tutto è difficile venir fuori. Se bevi troppo diventi alcolista, se fumi troppo ti viene il cancro. Se mangi troppo cioccolato diventi obeso, se fai la rockstar diventi successodipendente. Le rockstar sono soggette alle dipendenze: da fama, soldi, adulazione. È per questo che stiamo lì sul palco. I Rolling Stones vanno avanti da anni perché sono dipendenti dall’essere i Rolling Stones».

In che rapporti sei con tuo fratello?
«I soliti. Ma è irrilevante. Facciamo funzionare gli Oasis, con i dischi e i tour, il resto non conta, non serve essere amici. Jagger e Richards non lo sono più».

Hai detto che gli Oasis si fermeranno 5 anni. Il resto della band è d’accordo?
«Siamo in giro da 15 anni, abbiamo fatto sette album, cazzo, proviamo altro. Non puoi continuare per sempre, diventa noioso. La band non si scioglierà, ma io farò qualcosa di diverso per mantenere vivo il mio interesse. E non penso a un album solista. Picasso ebbe un periodo blu. Forse lo avrò anch’io! Ma non lascerò mai gli Oasis. Del resto, IO sono gli Oasis».
