Just as soon as we posted a stream for Hurley’s flute-featuring rocker “Unspoken”, Weezer made the nine other new songs to be included on their latest album available for listen on MySpace. Of those is “Run Away”, the much anticipated collaboration between the Rivers Cuomo led outfit and Ryan Adams. For the track, the tireless singer/songwriter served as both co-writer and lead guitarist. In turn, Cuomo describes it as “a very stirring and emotional and powerful Weezer song.”

Ryan Adams is heading back into the studio today to work on a new studio album, his first batch of entirely new material since the disappointing Cardinology in October 2008. He’s also set to release more archived material, namely BlackHole and III/IV over the coming months. However, the fact that he’s recording some entirely new material gives me hope.

Here’s what he had to say on his facebook page last night:
“Tomorrow starts the first day of two weeks of recording part one of a new solo album. This is the one I have been working on that is so far written on my old acoustic and I plan to keep these recordings simple…I am dubbing this the “west coast”sessions…THEN in two weeks I am off to NYC to record part two of the crazy NYC sessions which started as a “Cold Roses evil twin” minus the noodling vibe but now sound like some weird extension of Love is Hell. Where there was excessive jamming ( which I was shit at ) there are now cool chord passages and feedback and neat rhodes organ fills. Exciting times! Fingers crossed it all works.”

Richard Ashcroft: Verve reformation tensions were ‘inevitable’

Singer says there was a ‘realness’ to 2007 comeback

Richard Ashcroft has said it was “inevitable” that there were inter-band tensions when The Verve reformed in 2007.

The singer, who is set to release his debut album with new project United Nations Of Sound later this month (July 19), said there was a “realness” to the Wigan band’s comeback.

“It wasn’t a marketing thing. It was much better than hanging around,” he told the Observer.

Ashcroft also discussed disappearing from the public eye over the past couple of years, saying it is “fantastic” that he is outside the mainsteam again.

“But I don’t feel on the outside when I walk the streets. I’m not on the outside to the painters, to the delivery guys, the shop assistants. I’m not on the outside to the people of England,” he remarked.

In 2008, The Verve released their fourth album ‘Forth and headlined a trio of UK festivals - Glastonbury, T In The Park and V Festival.

However, there were regular rumours of tensions and arguments, with Ashcroft describing the reformation at the time as “not some ‘Mills And Boon’ scene running down the beach as the sun sets”.

Nicholas: La prima domanda che mi viene spontanea è data dal titolo del tuo ultimo album “L’Amore Non è Bello”, ma non è bello quando, non è bello in generale o ci sono dei momenti particolari?

Dente: E’ un punto di vista che esce in alcuni momenti di un rapporto ed era semplicemente un gioco per dare un titolo forte ad un disco che parlava d’amore, ma anche no! Penso che potesse sintetizzare quello che c’era dentro anche se non completamente: l’ho scelto perché è d’impatto ed è comunque un modo di dire…tutti i miei dischi avevano titoli tratti da modi di dire e quindi ne avevo cercato un altro e mi è venuto quello, mi sembrava abbastanza forte e in tema con quello che ci stava dentro.

N: Sei mai riuscito a scrivere delle canzoni quando i tuoi rapporti personali, i tuoi rapporti d’amore andavano bene e filava tutto liscio?

D: Non ce la puoi fare, quando fila tutto liscio uno va a farsi un giro.

N: Ho notato che in “Non c’è Due Senza Te” ricorre spesso la figura della moglie, invece ne “L’Amore Non è Bello” questa figura sembra quasi scompaia, non si ripropone?

D: Era un gioco mio personale per descrivere una persona, ma non c’era dietro tutta questa logica, era così.

N: Le tue canzoni sono praticamente tutte autobiografiche, quelle che invece non lo sono, come ad esempio “Beato Me”, che è andata nella compilation ideata dagli Afterhours “Il Paese è Reale”, l’hai trattata quasi come una prostituta, a quelle autobiografiche magari sei più affezionato?

D: Non l’ho trattata in modo diverso per questioni etiche o personali, l’ho trattata in modo diverso perché non faceva parte di un mio disco e sapevo dove sarebbe andata, quindi l’ho arrangiata e registrata con un tocco diverso da come sarebbe stata dentro un mio disco ma semplicemente per questo fatto, io ci sono molto affezionato a quella canzone anche se non è molto sentita come le altre.

N: Infatti si sente che non è un semplice riempitivo per una compilation. Magari però non si sarebbe potuta inserire nella tracklist di un tuo album…

D: Non ci è entrata in realtà perché era un po’ indietro coi lavori, non aveva ancora il testo, non mi convinceva ancora, non sapevo come arrangiarla e come inserirla nel disco e quindi è rimasta fuori. Quando mi hanno chiesto di farne una per il “Paese è Reale” mi è venuta in mente quella canzone… secondo me era perfetta, non era un brano che eticamente poteva stare dentro il mio disco e avrei potuto arrangiarlo in modo più aggressivo: questa cosa mi ha aiutato! Sia il fatto di scrivere un pezzo non autobiografico, sia il fatto di registrare una canzone e potermi sbizzarrire sapendo che questa non avrebbe fatto parte di un mio album: era una cosa diversa…

N: Quest’ultimo album lo hai registrato in studio: una novità poiché gli altri due li avevi registrati in casa. A livello di arrangiamento musicale è stato un vantaggio perché hai potuto collaborare con musicisti di livello… l’approccio sulla scrittura dei pezzi aveva già un pensiero volto allo studio e quindi una successiva evoluzione del pezzo?

D: I pezzi li scrivo chitarra e voce, avrei sempre voluto poter andare in uno studio anche nei dischi precedenti, però non me lo potevo permettere.
Anche le canzoni di “Non c’è Due Senza te”… credo che registrate in uno studio avrebbero avuto una marcia in più, perché quel disco è registrato com’è registrato: con un microfono da 20 € in casa, con un computer.

N: Sempre in condizioni migliori di come hai potuto registrare “Anice in Bocca”!

D: Oggi ho ascoltato un pezzo di “Anice in Bocca” e ho detto: aiuto!

N: Quando riascolti i pezzi vecchi cosa ti viene da dire e soprattutto li riascolti spesso?

D: No spesso no, però oggi ne ho riascoltati un paio che erano nella prima versione di “Anice in Bocca”… c’erano questi due pezzi che poi non sono andati e sono registrati veramente male, ma tanto male… però mi piacciono, comunque sono convinto di tutto ciò che ho fatto.
Anche “Anice in Bocca” a me piace moltissimo: è un disco un po’ così, così come è venuto.

N: Da “Anice in Bocca” a “L’Amore non è Bello” in mezzo c’è “Non c’è Due Senza Te” che è un po’ il passaggio fra uno e l’altro. Il primo mi sembra ancora bello introverso e molto più personale…

D: E’ tutto molto personale secondo me, poi la questione della registrazione migliore o peggiore, o dell’arrangiamento più curato o meno curato conta fino ad un certo punto. Ovviamente se tu scrivi delle canzoni e gli vuoi bene, ti piace magari vestirle bene, se hai la possibilità e anche se hai la voglia!
Io ho sempre un po’ amato la questione di avere una band, un posto dove registrare bene perché amo anche diversi dischi che sono molto musicali, molto arrangiati, con dei bei suoni e quindi mi piace anche intrigarmi con i suoni e per questo, in quest’ultimo disco, ho unito un po’ delle mie godurie, dallo scrivere al registrare.

N: “La Presunta Santità di Irene” che è il pezzo che apre “L’Amore Non è Bello” è un po’ particolare, ha un intro strumentale abbastanza lungo e dilatato a differenza degli altri pezzi che sono più immediati e diretti, come mai la scelta di questo pezzo come primo?

D: Quel pezzo è un po’ una citazione: un piccolo omaggio all’apertura di “Anima Latina” di Battisti che inizia in quel modo e che è un disco che amo molto… c’era questa canzone che si prestava ad avere un’apertura così. Mi piacciono molto gli attacchi dei dischi con parti strumentali e quindi, visto che ci stava, ho detto: facciamo questo piccolo omaggio!

N: Se ti chiedessero di scrivere una colonna sonora per un film, preferiresti utilizzare dei pezzi tuoi già scritti o magari, anche se non è facile, scriverne a comando?

D: Le colonne sonore sono quasi tutte strumentali, quindi scrivere parole sarebbe un po’ fuori luogo, a meno che il film non necessiti di questa cosa, ad esempio c’è una colonna sonora bellissima di “Un sogno Lungo un Giorno” (One from the Heart – 1982) che hanno fatto Tom Waits e Crystal Gayle: è tutta cantata ed è parte integrante del film; quella è una sfida molto bella e loro l’hanno vinta magistralmente. Comunque credo che accetterei, poi dipende da chi me lo propone e da che film è. Se me lo propone Vanzina, magari no.

N: Ti piacciono le canzoni con i finali tristi (cit.); ma anche i film con i finali tristi?

D: Non è che mi piacciono le canzoni con i finali tristi, no in realtà sì mi piacciono. I film mi piacciono e basta invece, non è che devono avere un finale triste o allegro.

N: Magari non un finale scontato dove vissero tutti felici e contenti?

D: No, però a volte son belli anche quelli insomma, anche perché uno si aspetta sempre il finale triste di un film e quando invece poi non lo è si stupisce.

N: Una canzone che il pubblico si aspetta da te stasera e non farai? Sempre che tu sappia cosa si può aspettare il pubblico.

D: “La Presunta Santità d’Irene” è un pezzo che mi chiedono sempre e non faccio mai perché quando lo farò, lo voglio fare bene, quindi lo voglio fare coi fiati e con tutto quello che ci sta dietro. Riarrangiare il pezzo così per portarlo dal vivo mi sembrava una cosa stupida.

N: Il titolo del prossimo album sarà: “Tra Moglie e Marito”?

D: No. Credo di no.

N: Ok! Grazie mille per la tua disponibilità.

D: Ciao.

Sarà in rotazione radiofonica da venerdì, 25 maggio, “Born Again” singolo che anticipa l’uscita di “the united nations of sound”, il nuovo progetto di RICHARD ASHCROFT, il carismatico leader dei Verve, con la sua nuova formazione RPA & The United Nations of SounD.

Nel brano si possono già trovare le nuove sonorità verso cui il nuovo progetto di dirige: alle consuete chitarre è infatti associato un sound nuovo, più vicino all’hip hop metropolitano del produttore No I.D (Jay Z, Alicia Jeys, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, ecc.).

L’album, che arriva dopo quattro anni dall’ultimo lavoro solista del cantautore inglese, uscirà il prossimo 20 luglio in Italia su etichetta Parlophones/EMI MUSIC. “the united nations of sound” è stato registrato tra New York, Los Angeles e Londra ed è stato prodotto a Chicago dall’artista e produttore hip hop No I.D (Jay Z, Alicia Jeys, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, ecc….).

Gli arrangiamenti sono stati curati da Benjamin Wright ( Off The Wall / Michael Jackson), il mixaggio audio dalla leggenda Motown Benjamin Reggie Dozier (Outkast, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye).

As you have noticed based on recent Facebook comments and metal releases, Ryan Adams is once again engaged in the world of music and, as any of his fans can tell you, that could mean anything from your standard, run-of-the-mill alt-folk album and a reunion with The Cardinals to Orion and nightly YouTube uploads featuring what happens when Ryan Adams gets bored. Basically, it all depends on how the acclaimed singer/songwriter is feeling.

Currently, that feeling appears to be one of nostalgia — or, at least, reliving some of his previously recorded efforts that have never seen the light of day. Along with plans to release the pre-Easy Tiger record known as Blackhole, Adams has also announced intentions to finally unearth Cardinals III/IV, a double album that was originally recorded by him and his band The Cardinals in 2006. Over the last 24 hours, Adams has further detailed the effort, both offering an image of the vinyl press and taking to the fan forum Ryan Adams Archive to provide some additional insight.

According to Adams, Cardinals III/IV will consist of 20 tracks, all of which were written by him. He describes the album, which he says was the “first record I made when I got off the booze and the drugs,” as “basically a rock record but not a punk record and not a record like [2003's Rock N' Roll]… it’s rock like Cardinals rock and not at all jammy.” He continues by proclaiming that it hears The Cardinals at their peak and even goes as far to say it “sounds the best of any record we made.”

Despite its high praise, however, the album has yet to receive a formal release. Adams blames the band’s other endeavors during that time — namely the release of Easy Tiger in 2006 — as the reason why.

“I think one of the hardest things for the band was making this and not backing this. We were ready to tell these stories but like all Cards adventures they were soon followed by more playing writing and touring and we got sidelined by making that mellow classic Easy Tiger. Also that is what the label wanted. I think we just assumed as a band that we would make Easy Tiger, it would go unnoticed and wham back to the III/IV record we would go. Fate was not interested in that story,” Adams explained.

Adams gave no timetable for the album’s release, but did note he hopes to get the “final mastered tracks sent over to the office tonight.” He also confirmed that, unlike Orion, Cardinals III/IV will be released digitally as well as on vinyl.

Of the tracks included — at least according to the aforementioned image of the vinyl press — will be “Breakdown/Resolve”. While your waiting for more details, check out a live cut of the song below.

And if you needed any more Adams nuggets, we should note that he also appears to be working on new music, as in stuff not recorded four years ago. As Relix points out, Adams has been recently writing and recording in both New Orleans and Los Angeles and noted he was particularly inspired following Ronnie James Dio’s memorial last month. What’s more, he left a comment on his Facebook page last week reading “New music is coming along great.”

Yeah, so basically, that music-free honeymoon is over.

After working at such a furious pace he released 11 albums from 2000 to 2008, Ryan Adams took a rare hiatus from recording last year, settling down with his wife, Mandy Moore, and authoring a few books. (Check out how he and other artists moonlighted from their rocker day jobs in our After Hours

But the singer-songwriter won’t be musically dormant much longer: he revealed on his Facebook page that he’s prepped a double LP of previously unreleased music with his former band the Cardinals titled Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, III/IV. He’s also planning to release another solo album titled Blackhole, which he cut in 2005.

“I f’n love this thing,” Adams wrote about Blackhole. “It took 4 years to make it and to me it is basically Love Is Hell Part 3…lots of shimmery guitar love on this. Exciting times.” While these two releases contain unreleased and archival material, Adams added that he’s gearing up to record new songs, that the first day of demos “went great.”

The news comes just weeks after Adams surprised fans with Orion, which he calls the “first fully realized sci-fi opus.” The album, available as a vinyl-download package only, has already sold out. Adams hasn’t announced when the new releases will be available, but if Orion is any indication, expect another pair of limited-pressing LPs bundled with poster, digital download and more. Keep an eye on Adams’ Facebook page and the Ryanada.ms site for more updates on Blackout, III/IV and whatever new music Adams is cooking up in the studio.

Liam Gallagher planning to write Oasis film or book ‘very soon’

Plus former Oasis man to open Pretty Green shop in London

Liam Gallagher has said he intends to turn his memories of former band Oasis into a book or film in the near future.

Gallagher, who launched film production company In 1 earlier this year to make a film about The Beatles’ Apple Records, was asked whether he planned a similar venture for Oasis in the near future.

“Yep, without a doubt. Very soon,” he said in an interview on his clothing company Pretty Green’s official website, adding that he wants to compile his memories “before I forget them all”.

Speaking about his forthcoming plans for the clothing company, Gallagher added that he’s set to open a bespoke store in London offering the garments.

He said: “Definitely man. We’re just waiting for the right place to come along, and I’m not gonna rush into it. We’re looking to do a temporary store in London this summer, the website will tell you where and when it’s happening.”
